Odour Assessment for Planning Permission
When Paul Owen and his business partner wanted to develop a plot of land near a pig farm and biogas plant, they were informed they needed an independent odour assessment to support their planning application.
Paul was advised to speak to Spectrum Environmental Support and we quickly began work.
A combination of desk research and a site visit were undertaken and a concise report was sent to Paul within just a few days.
Paul and his partner were delighted with the outcome, commenting positively on the quality of work, speed of response and value for money.

Performance test of odour abatement
On behalf of United Utilities, KMI commissioned Plasticon Ltd to manufacture and install an odour abatement plant at Burnley Wastewater Treatment Works. As part of the contractual requirements, Plasticon were required to demonstrate the equipment’s ability to conform to the original equipment specifications, as specified by KMI.
SES was commissioned to complete the odour performance test, which included measurements across the abatement equipment of the following key odorous parameters:
- Odour Concentration (ouE/m3)
- Hydrogen Sulphide
- Dimethyl Sulphide
- Total Mercaptans
- Total Volatile Organic Compounds
- Air Flows
- Differential Pressures
Over the course of 28 days, SES were able to fulfil the monitoring requirements and demonstrate that the abatement equipment was performing to specification. In turn, Plasticon were able to hand over the asset to KMI and complete the project.
